this paper intends to give general guidelines for the environmental impact analysis of planted forest projects, specifically related to their hydrological impacts. These possible impacts are not inherent to the plantations themselves, but depend on the interactions of the plantations with the prevailing environmental conditions. In this regard, the impacts could occur at different intensities, but, for the same reason, they can also be minimized by the adoption of management strategies that consider the potentialities and limitations of the physical environment. Because of that, it is argued that the adoption of catchments as the basic unit for the planning and implementation of planted forest management is a consistent strategy that naturally takes into account these interactions and also provides a basic framework for the analysis of the cause-and-effect relationship between planted forest management and water resources impacts.
